EU gives priority status to 10GW renewable energy projects in Algeria and Tunisia

EU gives priority status to 10GW renewable energy projects in Algeria and Tunisia

2025-09-08

The MedGen project will be equipped with an energy storage system, and the electricity generated will be used locally and exported to Italy. Having been designated a CB RES project, the project is eligible for research or construction funding under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).

MedGen also plans to build two 2GW high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission lines, which will export a total of 22.8TWh of electricity to Italy annually. The EU's Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) called the project "an important flagship project for promoting sustainable development, regional integration, and EU energy diversification."

Currently, 13 projects have been designated as CB RES, five of which are newly approved. These include an offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea, a wind power project straddling the border between Latvia and Lithuania, a study of Portugal's offshore wind power potential, and renewable heating facilities in Słubice, Poland, and Frankfurt am Main (Oder River), Germany.

CINEA stated that these projects are crucial for strengthening Europe's energy security, promoting cross-border cooperation, and accelerating the deployment of renewable energy. The EU also supports cross-border PV projects through other financing mechanisms. The first cross-border PV tender, launched in April 2023, was funded by Luxembourg and supported seven PV projects in Finland totaling 212.99 MW. The second cross-border PV tender, launched in July 2024 and announced in May 2025, supported seven PV projects in Finland and two wind power projects in Estonia.
