The Netherlands allocates 700 million euros to support 11 large-scale hydrogen projects

The Netherlands allocates 700 million euros to support 11 large-scale hydrogen projects

2025-08-19

The Netherlands has allocated €700 million (approximately $820.5 million) to 11 companies in the second round of its subsidy program to support large-scale hydrogen projects with a total electrolyzer capacity of approximately 602 megawatts.

The Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) stated that the funds, part of the second round of the country's Large-Scale Production Subsidy (OWE) program for hydrogen electrolyzers, support the construction of plants of 0.5 megawatts or larger for the production of sustainable hydrogen.

The total amount of this round of subsidies is close to €1 billion, but the RVO received over €3.2 billion in applications. The 11 selected projects have a combined electrolyzer capacity of approximately 602 megawatts, triple the size of the largest hydrogen plant currently under construction in the Netherlands.

The hydrogen produced by these projects will help reduce CO2 emissions in refineries, the chemical industry, and hydrogen refueling stations. The companies involved must complete the projects by mid-2030.

According to the RVO, the average subsidy level for the 11 winning projects is €1.78 million per megawatt of electrolyzer capacity. The agency said its evaluation criteria are based on the amount of unit capacity subsidies applied for by the enterprises, taking into account the subsidies they have previously received.
